Prayer is at the heart of the Christian life, as we draw closer to God through Jesus Christ. Our prayer life is caught up in the whole prayer of the Church worldwide and across all time. As we approach prayer we do so along with millions of other men, women and children, and also with those who have gone before us.

This page will show you something of the prayer life we share at St Mary's as well as being a devotional aid for you as we hope. You may also chose to pray the Stations of the Cross, or send us a prayer request which will be remembered at the weekday masses.

Here are a few pictures of the statues which we have in church along with a prayer to use with each one.

The Sacred Heart

The heart is the symbol of love. People say 'I love you with all my heart'. When we speak of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we are thinking of the great love the Father has shown us through his divine Son, the truly human Jesus, 'like to us in everything except sin'.

Heart of Jesus, truly human, have mercy on us
Heart of Jesus, truly divine
Heart of Jesus still praying for us to the Father
Heart of Jesus in all things like us except sin
Heart of Jesus whose love for humanity is scorned by man
Heart of Jesus my hope in sadness
Heart of Jesus, my strength in temptation
Heart of Jesus, my protection in danger
Heart of Jesus, loving me now despite everything

Almighty and everlasting God,
look upon the heart of your beloved Son
and upon the praise and satisfaction
he offered you on behalf of sinners.
Forgive those who now seek your mercy
in the name of the same Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you for ever and ever. Amen.

Praying with the Saints

Just as I ask an acquaintance or a friend to pray for me, so I may ask one of the saints. Together with the saints we are all members of God's family. This is partly expressed in the prahse 'Communion of Saints'. The Church has always called upon the prayers of the saints, and throughout the year most notably in the litany of the saints in the Easter Vigil and at ordinations of priests and bishops. Here is a prayer asking all saints to pray for us.

May Christ make us an everlasting gift to you, heavenly Father, and enable us to share in the inheritance of your saints, with Mary the virgin mother of God; with the apostles, the martyrs, saint ......... (the saint of the day) and all your saints, on whose constant intercession we rely for help.
Prayer at the foot of the Cross

Lord Jesus Christ,
give us courage and hope and teach us to follow your example in being obedient, even to death, death on a cross, knowing that we shall indeed be raised up by sharing in your self-emptying. Amen.
When we come to mass we come to pray, to meet with God. Sometimes it can all feel a bit overpowering with splendid music, or crying babies even. The incense draws us into prayer as the atmosphere of the church changes to beckon us closer to Christ. Here are a selection of prayers to use before, during and after mass.

A Prayer of preparation before mass begins

Almighty and everliving God,
behold we approach the sacrament
of the passion of your only begotten Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ.
As sick, we come to the physician of life;
as unclean, tot he fountain of mercy;
as blind, to the light of eternal splendour;
as needy, to the Lord of heaven and earth.
We pray you of your great mercy to heal our sickness, wash our foulness, lighten our darkness, and enrich our poverty; that receiving the Body and Blood of your dear Son, we may be incorporated into his mystical body, and ever be counted among his members; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit One God now and for ever. Amen.

A Prayer of Preparation for those to lead the worship

Almighty God,
grant your blessing to those
who lead us in worship today.
Give wisdom and thoughtfulness to your preachers,
diligence and care to your server,
and good voices to those who lead our singing.
Remember too those who teach our young ones
grant them grace as they teach the way of Christ. Amen.
