To bring down the body a
ladder was set up against the cross. Jacob dreamed of a ladder linking
heaven and earth, the angels of God ascending an descending upon it.
This is what we all seek: a ladder to bring us to heaven.
Jesus erected this ladder; He is himself the stairway to heaven,
the means by which we can come to the Father. Every cross we erect;
in our churches or in our homes; carried on a chain about our neck
or set up by the side of the road; placed by a grave or made in
blessing on the head of a new born child, every sign of the cross
is a symbol of the true cross - the heavenly ladder by which the
Son of Man entered into death and up which He will draw us to share
His life.
He shared in our death so that we can partake in His life. He bore
the punishment which was due to us so that our condemnation to death
is commuted to the reward of life. He shed His blood so that we
who are impure in our sins can be washed once for all and allowed
to enter the glory of heaven. He is the ladder to heaven for us
and for the angels.
Lord help us to climb ever higher in the way to haven;
uphold us by your cross and let us ascend upon the Son of Man to
the place where your glory dwells.
