The Scripture Reading
Numbers 20:7-13
7: and the LORD said to Moses,
8: "Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water; so you shall bring water out of the rock for them; so you shall give drink to the congregation and their cattle."
9: And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
10: And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?"
11: And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.
12: And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."
13: These are the waters of Mer'ibah, where the people of Israel contended with the LORD, and he showed himself holy among them.
The Mediation & Prayer
The third fall comes at the end of the way. The last step has been taken, and jesus collapses onto the ground at the place where the cross will be set up. If we consider that He could have been stripped while lying on the ground, then we may think that from this fall He will not rise until He is lifted up on the cross. This then is the end of the path which he began when He walked “a stone’s throw” from the disciples in the Garden, and, falling down on His knees, prayed that the Father’s will might be done.

In the moment of that falling down in the Garden the angel of the agony came to Him to strengthen Him. But that strengthening was the terrible cup. The messenger of God brought the final answer to the prayer of Jesus, the certitude that this indeed is the will of the Father, the knowledge that he was to walk this road of suffering to the end, where casting Himself down on the ground He would be lifted up at last on the arms of the cross.

Father give me grace always to seek your will; and strengthen me to undertake it whether it be to me a path of joy or a way of sorrow.
