Have we never seen an angel?
The angels knock on our doors looking for help; they stand at street
corners unsure of the way; they demand our attention when we are busy;
they disrupt our church services with their crying; they ask silly
questions when we are concentrating; they fill the television screens
with guilt inducing images of their suffering; they ruin our days
out by latching on to us for company; they interrupt our lives with
their manifold calls for help, attention and hospitality.
Veronica saw an angel: more than an angel she saw the one whom
the angels worship: and she saw in Him what we see in them: she
saw His need. She knew she could not remove suffering from the world:
only God could do that; she knew she could not eradicate poverty;
only the One who has all riches in his hands can do that; she knew
she could not give homes to the homeless or comfort the bereaved
or end wars; or destroy the power of death. But she could do one
small thing. And instead of pretending that because of her inability
to sort out the big things she was freed of her responsibility to
do the small thing, she reached out and wiped His face.
And He gave her His image on a cloth as a sign that He was sorting
out all the big stuff, and renewing the image and likeness of God
in her soul and in ours. Let us look out for the angels: for they
give us opportunity in small things to receive from Jesus the really
big things that actually matter.
Father may we entertain your angels often, so that Jesus
might restore His image in us.
